Big Bras d'Or Wharf Inspection

Big Bras d'Or Wharf Inspection

Structural inspection of timber crib and pilework wharves at an active fishing harbour.

When Summer 2019
Where Big Bras d'Or, Victoria County, NS
Client Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbour Branch (DFO-SCH)
Core Tasks
  • Component-by-component structural inspection of four wharves, including in-field visual and diving inspections
  • Topographic survey of all wharf structures
  • Evaluation of physical condition and safe loading capacity of wharves
  • Preparation of multiple recommended options and cost estimates for maintenance, repair, etc.

The Big Bras d’Or SCH facility comprises four wharves. The oldest two of these structures were originally constructed before 1950. The facility was expanded substantially in 1953 and again in 1982, and multiple repair/rehabilitation projects were carried out at the site between 1950 and 2016.

In an effort to ensure the continued safe operation of this active fishing harbour, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbour Branch (DFO-SCH) engaged SHM Canada to prepare a report evaluating the physical condition of the wharves with respect to permissible safe loading, rate of deterioration of principal components, remaining functional life, and required rehabilitation measures to extend functional life.

The SHM Canada team conducted and documented a detailed, component-by-component visual inspection of the wharves and approach in accordance with the Ontario Structures Inspection Manual (OSIM). A diving inspection allowed our team to assess the condition of the submerged portions of the wharves. A topographic survey of the harbour facility and non-destructive testing of wharf components were also carried out.

Following this fieldwork, our team produced a detailed report according to the client's specifications. This report provided multiple options for repair and rehabilitation and associated Class 'C' cost estimates.
