Hipson Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge known to have been built by a visiting Scottish mason in the early 1900s. The bridge, originally on Highway 3, was abandoned in the 1930s when the highway was realigned. The bridge, along with a monument for persons lost at sea, is a major tourist attraction.

The integrity of the bridge, however, was compromised due to seepage through mortar joints, which led to the deterioration of mortar in the joints over decades of minimal maintenance. The bridge foundations were also affected by the high-velocity flow of water, raising serious concerns about the bridge’s safety.

They always displayed a very detailed approach to their work with a very diligent focus on their staff’s safety during the field work. All design work has been completed in a very timely and professional manner to our fullest satisfaction.

I have no hesitation of highly recommending SHM Canada to anyone… and would gladly engage them again in future projects.

Client Feedback

SHM Canada was selected to carry out a detailed investigation of the bridge, and to design a rehabilitation strategy. Capitalizing on his overseas experience in the construction and repair of stone masonry, SHM Canada president Vidya Limaye developed a rehabilitation strategy that would help to extend the life of this community icon. In order to enhance the experience of visitors to the bridge and memorial, this strategy included landscape design in collaboration with Outside! Planning and Design Studio.
