Core Tasks
  • Design of structural strengthening system for speed-tile wall panels

The Fredericton Centennial Building is an important landmark that features multiple murals created by New Brunswick artists. Plans for a major structural rehabilitation of the Centennial Building were announced in 2017. Demolition work undertaken by the contractor as part of this rehabilitation generated significant vibration in the structure and resulted in serious concern about the structural integrity of two murals supported by brittle clay-based speed tiles.

SHM Canada, as a specialized sub-consultant to Goguen Architecture, Inc., designed a structural strengthening system for the speed-tile wall panels. This system incorporated high-strength carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabric and wood framing. The strengthening work was successfully completed in the fall of 2018.
